Karen Schifman is an art historian, mixed-media artist and collector.  Now retired, she taught art history for over 20 years at Cal State University, Northridge. The focus of Karen’s research is on women artists and the representation of women in visual culture. She has curated and organized several exhibitions and contributed to many exhibition catalogues. Her contemporary art blog, “Artful Amphora” is focused on women artists exhibiting in So. California. She sits on the board of the Southern California Women’s Caucus.
As a mixed media artist, her work has narrative content that is inspired by personal and collective journeys. As an art historian, images from the past inform a lot of her work. She explores memory, some imagined and some that weave the richness of art history and speak to connect with social concerns. Many of her works are multi-layered both visually and symbolically. Karen exhibits her work locally.
